Open learning for ICT; how does that work?
As a student at Fontys ICT, you learn in a way that suits you. This means that various forms of education are used, offering a lot of variation in terms of structure, predictability and freedom. Open education, also known as open learning, is a special variant within this. But what does it actually mean? In the first episode of Updates Available Online, host and teacher Erdinç Saçan talks to Eric Slaats, spiritual father of open learning.
Learning by doing
ICT is a field that is constantly changing. Classic structures, textbooks and knowledge reproduction do not fit in with training future professionals who are self-learning. As an ICT professional, you continuously have to learn new things, develop your knowledge and that requires a new kind of education. Eric Slaats helped build the vision behind open education; a form of education in which students themselves have control and can follow their passion, interest and talent in their own project. Learning by doing in a setting that suits you.
Ownership of your process
As a student, you have 100% ownership, but you also have a say in your entire process, including assessment. Not only does this provide more motivation, it also helps train professionals with unique skillsets. But, how does that actually work? What are the challenges? Erdinç Saçan is a lecturer-researcher at Fontys ICT and talks to Eric Slaats about this topic in the first episode of Updates Available Online.
