Project description
Design an experiential workshop solution to enable caregivers and family members in various communities to gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges confronted by individuals with epilepsy, fostering a heightened sense of empathy and support.
Context
The current workshop with Kempenhaeghe involves an exploration of epilepsy, encompassing its various forms and effects. Participants engaged in a tactile experience, using balloons to simulate the anxiety associated with the uncertainty of seizure occurrences. Additionally, the use of electroshock on the arms replicated the muscle tension experienced during an epileptic episode. Visual impairments were also emulated with the utilization of special glasses, inducing blurry vision, altered color perception, and limited visibility.
The overarching objective is to foster a more immersive and empathetic understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with epilepsy. This involves devising a streamlined, portable workshop framework that can be easily set up in diverse settings, thereby enabling broader outreach and engagement. Building on this foundation, the initiative aims to integrate cutting-edge technologies and interactive tools to facilitate a more dynamic and impactful learning experience. By harnessing emerging advancements, the goal is to elevate the workshop's effectiveness in cultivating awareness and fostering a deeper sense of empathy and support within communities.
Results
The people from Kempenhaeghe were happy with our work, especially liking how real it felt when using virtual reality (VR) glasses. This positive response shows that our project was good and creative. The VR glasses helped make the experience more lifelike, giving a real sense of what it's like to have epilepsy. This not only showed we were good at the technical part but also that we cared about making an experience that meant something to the people who would use it.
The good feedback from Kempenhaeghe tells us that our project matters in helping people understand epilepsy better. By bringing together technology and healthcare, we not only did what was expected but went above and beyond, making an experience that goes beyond normal learning.
