Table sound and noise

Project description

The main challenge of the project is measuring the sound intensity and using the measurements to influence the environment to be quieter.

Context

The Fontys ICT InnovationLab is a creative learning/working environment laid out as an open office, resulting in the Open Innovation Labs (OILS) being often experienced as noisy and restless, especially by students and lecturers who are more sensitive. The experience is also that noisiness is contagious; increased noise in one place leads to increased noise in another and increased noise throughout the OIL.

Results

A system is created in which the noise levels of users get measured. Whenever this measurement exceeds a threshold set by a user that can access the user interface, the users get warned with a light.

An area concept has also been thought up. With a defined area, which can be changed or added by the user, in the user interface, all devices can be set to a certain noisiness.
