Project description
In the Fontys ICT InnovationLab, students, teachers, researchers and the business community work together on applied research and the development of the ICT solutions of tomorrow. The Lab has a new visual identity. Playful, graphically powerful and different from the well-known Fontys visual identity. The wish is to show this visual language in the form of dynamic, interactive projections in the stairwells (walls, floor,
ceiling) of building TQ with suitable beamers.
The main question of the project was: How can the visual identity of the InnovationLab be strengthened by using (interactive) dynamic projections in building TQ? As the client also specifically wanted interactivity with the building. Another important question became: What personality does the building have? Our concepts and prototypes thus especially focused on seeing the building as its own entity with its own personality, desires and wishes and we tried to reflect this through our interactive prototypes.

Results
Our overarching concept became Rafiki, an interactive building that wants to Nurture you in one of 4 different ways: Welcoming, Inspiration, Contact and Mindfulness.
We made 6 different interactive prototypes based on our concept. Each prototype has its own uniqueness and makes it so the user can interact with the building in different ways. The 6 prototypes are
- Greetings from Rafiki: Welcome to the InnovationLab. Using TouchDesigner the projected visuals in the InnovationLab will react to your movements when you walk pass by.
- Dynamic Creation: Stand in front of the wall and a unique blob will appear that represents you, Everyone part of TQ is part of each other, we create a more lively place together.
- Unintended Connection: Using TouchDesigner and a Kinect we create a wall of particles that can be moved by users but also by two users standing in front of the Kinect. We hereby visualize a connection between two users who might’ve never been connected otherwise at all.
- Talk with Rafiki: Through a numpad and Unity users can have an interactive conversation with the building, you can do anything from talking about your day, to jamming to some music with the building.
- Visualizing the invisible: A mindfulness practice: The visitor goes into a room and has a conversation with Rafiki, the building. Throughout the seemingly basic conversation, a deeper meaning lays underneath.
- Words Of Encouragement: A visitor can go in a room, hear an encouraging message the person before them left behind, especially for the visitor and leave a personal message for the next person. Through this visitors learn to give each other encouraging messages but also (and more importantly) have to realize that it can be very easy for them to compliment a stranger but not to compliment themselves.
About the project group
Our project group consisted solely of people from ICT & Media Design. All in different semesters. We had 1 member in his 3rd semester, 3 in their 4th semesters, 1 in his 6th semester and 1 in his 7th semester. At first we started with laying down a strong and solid concept and then each went to work individually on our own interactive prototype. We worked separately but under the same concept. We made a space where we could each express ourselves creatively in our own way but could also constantly test with each other and gave each other lots of feedback.
