Project description
The main problem was finding a way to make an aspect of building automation fun. A design challenge of the project was making sure that the solution would work with the OpenRemote platform.
Context
Although the main problem revolves around building automation, the OpenRemote team and Natlab director Ilona van Heeckeren were interested in a project that could flourish a bit beyond that. The end goal for the project was to make something 'fun' that would showcase the capabilities of the OpenRemote platform, while also being interesting enough to be showcased at Dutch Design Week.
Results
Plant Pal is an IoT system, which uses sensors to monitor attributes regarding the environment of a plant (light, humidity, soil moisture and temperature).
The measurements of those attributes are then processed into user-friendly plant status updates, which are communicated to the system user via the dashboard and voice assistant.
In the end, Plant Pal is there to create a ‘fun’ and user-friendly plant monitoring system.

About the project group
This project was developed by two Semester 3 students following the ICT & Software track. Both students worked autonomously to build up the different parts of the project, while working together to make sure everything remains cohesive.
