Project description
How technology can enhance physical board game experience, while keeping the essence, direction, and feeling of the original technology free original version. How to design a technological solution which adds value without change to the original game.
Context
Morale Design game is a board game belong to the serious games category, as the game is meant to bring propel together when discussing dilemmas. The board game position the players in real life jobs roles related to the dilemma at hand, the roles (characters) allow the players the trail of seeing the discussion point from a different prospective. The aim is to bring consensus between different points of views. And this serious socially oriented game is empowered by its old format physical board factor, as it bring people to look at each other and engage directly around a table. On the other hand it is limited by 8 players and having each theme of the game limited to printing job and expansive logistics.
For that, Surf in collaboration with Morale design game, has started a research project looking to expand the experience of the game play, and possibly the players numbers through technology.
Results
In a pioneer research project first trail scooping the project can be a common elusive task to be done by small nonspecialized team, however with persistence and following a well chosen research pattern we been able to:
Reduced the technological enhancement menu to a specific and concrete set of services and clear direction.
In other words, from investigating how augmented reality, microphone voice registration combined with machine learning models like (speech to text, topic modelling, entity recognition, and possibly summery text generation), from considering the values of adding projectors lights on top of board for expanding the information density on the board, we found the real first needed enhancement the client actually want, and really need.
The first and most valuable outcome of the project is the choice and coining of the definition for what technology enhancement and digitally translate the game means and will be.
The design iterations and research DOT research patterns steps combined with the client management process led to a concrete, relevant, and well detailed desired solution.
We have now four Figma designs iterations, which provide solutions to enhance and expand the physical board with digital technology.
Adding to that we have a tested well-chosen tech-stack for software development. The tech stack is already used as we have the first iteration of the frontend/backend developed.
About the project group
We are two students, Nour is doing open learning for his first time as a minor, Nour specialized for the last three semesters in AI and Luay is doing his fourth semester in open learning and wishing to challenge the UI aspects of development.
