Project description
Design and brand an engaging product that connects people who are interested in AI developments, promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing within the AI community, while also allowing users to actively participate within the organised meet-ups.
The design challenge focuses on finding a solution to make sure people have an easy way to register and find out about these meetings. They want to be able to inform more people from within the target audience about these meetings, in a way that catches their attention and makes them take attending within AMAI seriously. We have taken into account both current users and potential users when working on a design solution within the scope of the project.
We have used the Double Diamond methodology to gain insights and find a solution to the design challenge.
Context
We are working for the Afternoon Meetups on AI (AMAI) group at Fontys, which is a part of the AI&Big Data lectorate. They have weekly meet-ups where participants meet and talk about AI innovations, projects or new developments.
The domain of the project is mainly in Education, since the meet-ups have an educational character within them. However, the topic of the meet-ups is Artificial Intelligence, which provides a technological aspect to the field of research. The time-span we worked on this project, was for about 11 weeks.
During this time we have conducted research to find out more about the problem that they were facing with and then came up with potential solutions to it. The problems identified are that there is not enough awareness within AMAI and this doesn’t allow the group to reach their full potential but also that they don’t have a clear presence and platforms to make it easy for potential interested audiences to join.
The 2 problems are related to each other, so we worked together on finding some solution to them. The target audience of this project are teachers and researchers from within Fontys with knowledge in the AI field, but also students who can join these meetings on occasions to present projects from within AI developments or want to learn more about a certain topic.
Results
During the 11 weeks we worked on this project, we have focused not only on conducting user research and understanding the target audience, but also on providing a solution to the challenges identified.
The problems we identified during research are that:
- There is not a stable registering platform for users (speakers/attendees) to register to AMAI's meet-ups;
- There is not enough awareness about AMAI among the target audience;
- The current branding was not representative to AMAI.
One of the important outcomes that came out of the research is the identification of the target audience - teachers and researchers from within Fontys with knowledge in the AI field, but also students who can join these meetings on occasions to present projects from within AI developments or want to learn more about a certain topic. We were able to come up with a solution based on this finding.
Another important result we have concluded, is that the client's original wish to only have a redesign of the platform is not enough for fixing the problem(s) we have identified during the research phase. To be able to make AMAI known within their target audience and potential interested people, we have deployed a set of different methods to be able to reach these people within Fontys: interactive (AR) posters, interactive screens with AMAI's schedule, as well as a clear re-design of their current landing page which reflects the group's identity and values. On top of that, we have tested and developed a new Registration page, to be able to accommodate users who want to check the schedule/register as a speaker/vote for a new topic.
As part of a more relevant and consistent branding, we have come up with a new colour palette, logo and name to be in line with their goals. The new name, AIM - Artificial Intelligence Meet-ups, is more flexible and allows the group to organise the meetings more dynamically, not only in the afternoon.

About the project group
Our Team has a background in ICT&Media, with different specialisations like Cyber Security, Smart Mobile, Gamification. We are all in semester 6 and following Advanced Media. We still have some semesters to go before graduating and are looking froward to the next chapters at Fontys.
